Q: Do I have to have an OPC server in order to use your product ? A:
NO -- these Instrumentation ActiveX controls have been around and in use in applications long before we added OPC client capabilities to them. You are welcome to pass data to the controls using your own code and setting properties. These controls do NOT care where the data comes from - data is data. The OPC capability is a function built in to reduce engineering time and speed time to market for users in the industrial automation who wish to use the OPC standard to connect to and get data from control systems on the shop floor.
Q: What is the difference between an ActiveX and a .NET component? A:
Both are development toolkits that you (the developer) use within your development language to extend and simplify the functionality needed in your development project. Although their concept is the same, and the way they are used is the same, the places where you can use them is different:
ActiveX controls: usable in ActiveX containers and .NET containers (wrapped) .NET components:
can be used in a .NET applications
As Microsoft continues to enhance and promote their .NET technology as the new development
platform, the need for .NET components will become apparent while the need for ActiveX controls will decrease as the technology is
phased-out by Microsoft.
